Children's Ebooks

Did you know you can check out ebooks from the library? In order to do so, you search and download via Overdrive Media Console. There are "how to" pages online to walk you through the download process. There are also brochures here at the library to help, or as always, just ask one of us.

As ebooks have grown more popular, the Hamilton-Wenham Library has been purchasing titles just for you to check out. We've recently acquired a few children's titles, and will be adding more. There are a lot more children's ebooks and audiobooks that are available to all members of MVLC including you. Check one out today!

For a list and summary of the children's titles exclusive to Hamilton-Wenham, click here.

Goodreads - see what Lorraine and Nicole are reading!

We just added a new widget on the right hand column of the blog, directly under Facebook, you will now see Goodreads (previously where Library Thing was). Goodreads will give you a list of what Lorraine and Nicole have read, click here to start looking at the list or below for more direction if you are unfamiliar with Goodreads.

Goodreads is a social network for people who love reading. You can add books you've read, books you want to read, and what you are currently reading if you create an account of your own. However, you don't have to have an account to see what Lorraine and Nicole have read. You will see ten random books from our read shelf on the side each time you load the blog. To view all the books on our read shelf, simply click the link on the top that says Lorraine's bookshelf: read. You can sort the books by rating, or by the shelves we are creating on the left hand side including historical fiction, 100 picture books everyone should know and Wimpy-Kid read-alikes.

We have been working to add the books that Lorraine and Nicole have read. Not all of them have been rated yet, but if they are added you can assume we would recommend them to a child in one situation or another. However, all of them are linked to our Library Catalog under the review so if you see something that looks interesting, you can click on the link to request it. If you have questions or trouble navigating Goodreads, stop by the Children's Room one day, we'll be happy to show you.

Silverwing Interrupted! Congrats to Taylor, 9 and Kaitlyn, 7

Silverwing began his week at the Hamilton Post Office where, due to circumstances beyond our control, he was removed from the window. Once we discovered that there was a problem, Dr. Pett came to the rescue and Silverwing spent the end of the week at the Hamilton-Wenham Veterinary Clinic. Due to this unusual circumstance, there are two winners this week! Taylor who spotted Silverwing at the Post Office and Kaitlyn who found him at the Veterinary Clinic. Congratulations to you both!

A Note: Silverwing does not typically visit two places each week. This week's change was out of our control and we apologize for the confusion. Please continue to look for Silverwing throughout this week and next in a single location either in Hamilton or Wenham. Once you have found Silverwing, stop by the Children's Room and write your name, age and place you spotted him. Remember, you can enter yourself once each day!

New Media in the Children's Room

We've been busy expanding our collection in order to serve you better!   Below you will find information about all types of  new media available for checkout.

Introducing....

MUZZY Multimedia Language Courses

MUZZY Multimedia Language Courses are designed to help you learn the basics of foreign language. We have  two levels in eight different languages. Muzzy includes DVDs and CDs, with activity sheets available online. Languages available are Spanish, French, German, Italian, English (ESL/ELL), Russian, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese. Click for a list of all the languages and levels available.

Playaway Views

The idea is similar to Playaway audios except these are light weight, portable videos, with high quality imagery at the touch of a button.  This new technology can be found in libraries only, and are durable and easy to use, even for our youngest patrons. Headphones are not required, as views have small built in speakers, though they are an option.  Playaway views come fully charged, but have an charger included in the case for charging as needed.   Just check them out, hit play and you can learn about history, weather, mythology, animals and more! A complete list of our Playaway views can be found here.

Look What's New & Updated!

Hooked on Phonics

We've had Hooked on Phonics in the room for awhile now, but we've recently ordered new and updated editions in a complete eight-level program, serving preschoolers through second graders. Each level has storybooks, workbooks, and a DVD to help your child learn to read. The levels begin at pre-K and continue through second grade. Stop by and check one out. Click for a list of the levels as well as what each level focuses on.

Playaways

Playaways are a portable audiobooks. Unlike CDs or tapes you don't need anything except headphones and a AAA battery to listen to this book.  They can also be played in the car if you have the required cable. We've added 18 new Playaways to our collection. For a complete list of all our Playaways click here.

Books on CD

We've also been working to expand the number of audiobooks we have on CD as well as CD and book sets. For a list of our new audiobooks click here.
